![]() The twelve minute group is a diverse set of mostly women from virgin to veteran marathoners. We have a variety of careers from printer to district attorney but we have a common goal in mind to finish the marathon strong. Even though we are a smaller group you will always see smiles and occasional singing as we make our way along the trail. I am proud of our marathoner trainees. Our group includes, Kelly, Laura, Mo, Kris, Ingrid, Doc, Arlene, Lisa, Donna, Susan and myself Chris. We do have one tradition worth mentioning. At every run we have a half-way dance led by Laura. On Wednesday and Thursdays some of us meet for midweek runs at Yankee at 5 in the morning. I am very proud of this dedicated group. |

Come run a mile (or 26.2!) in our shoes! If you did, we promise you'd enjoy the journey! We are a fun mix of newbies and veterans who have been working together to achieve this goal on 10/10/10! Led by Don Potter & Fran Quirk, we have gotten to know each other these past few months while tackling the Oak Forest trails. We have learned what motivates each of us to attack the "enemy." Those who have run marathons before have shared their words of wisdom, while the new kids on the trails have shared their worries. But we all have one goal: to participate on 10/10/10 and succeed! And we WILL! See you all at the finish line! |

![]() If you had to choose a single word to describe the 10:30 group, it would have to be "awesome". Nah, that's too subjective. Instead, we'll go with "diverse". In this group of 10 regulars, the ages range from 33 to 60. They have more than 20 children between them but there are some in diapers while some have grown up and moved away. Their vocations range from doctor/professor to president and CEO of their own home. But despite all of these differences, they are never starved for conversation. Pictured from left to right we have:
Joe Yates* (Tinley Park), Larry Elliott* (Palos Hills), Erin Brown* (Palos Park), Spero Speropoulos (Palos Hills), Jan Dowell (Homewood), Jan Lang* (Orland Park), Peachy Benson (Oak Lawn), Kathy Smith* (Orland Park), Sally Mikuta (Orland Park), and Jack Kyle (Homewood)
[*First-time marathoner]
We are lucky enough to have just as many first-time marathoners as we do experienced runners. That makes every week even more of an accomplishment than it already is. Between our experienced runners, we have completed 26 marathons and countless races of other distances. We can't wait to show Chicago what our group can do!

![]() And WHAT a group it is !!! The one liners start flying before we've reached the first half mile.... Needless to say, alot of humor in this group. And what better way to pass the time than making each other smile mile after mile. Between us, we range in age from 21 to 64 and have run 61 marathons. This veteran group has welcomed SEVEN first time marathones: Alex, Angie, Beth, Dallas, Erin, June, and Lisa. We wish them well and hope they really appreciate what an accomplishment this truly is... If it were easy, everyone would do it ! Whether it's their first or twentieth marathon (Mike Kenny!) this group has consistently shown tremendous enthusiasm. They should be extremely proud of themselves for the effort they are putting forth: running hills, climbing stairs and speedwork. I am confident all this hard work will carry them through on race day. |

My name is Tom Wiora, the 8 minute group leader. When I was younger, I always thought I was master of my domain. As I grow older, I realize that I was just led to believe that and hand been the victim of cunning and guile. Looking back, the signs should have been easy to read but I was blind. My eyes started to open the weekend we dropped our oldest off for his Freshman year at college. Upon leaving, the wife looked at me with eyes welling and said "I don't know if I can handle this". At the time, I thought she was referring to the fact that our son was getting older and moving forward with his life without us. However, I now believe it was the foundation for some more cunning and guile. What the eye-welled look was a panic "Oh my God, in 2 short years, after we send our other two off, it's going to be just me and him - 24/7. I've got to find this guy a hobby, a time-devouring hobby, so I won't have to entertain him 24/7." Two weeks later, she attended a group meeting for Yankee Runners. With excitement in her voice, she said " Tom, these people are right up your alley, you should go, next week, the sooner the better". She was once again right, and at the same time preserved her sanity for years to come. Two years later, after dropping our youngest off at school, her eyes welled once again. I now know how to read her. They were tears of joy -- we were finally on our own. Later that evening, she said, Tom why don't you go for a run, a long run. She always knows how to make me feel like the master and I always question later, am I really?I am please to introduce the 8 minute group for Yankee Runners 2010: |

I feel really privileged this year to run with such an amazing group of highly talented runners. These runners on a weekly basis dazzle me with their intense determination and overall work ethic. Not only are they extremely talented, they have some of the biggest hearts I've ever seen. Karrie Wright, who just came off a 3:09 Boston, has her sights set on thrashing the Chicago course with a vengeance. Right by her side, is her trusty side kick and fellow kenyan Shannon Javaras. Over the years, I have witnessed Shannon's success and transformation into a highly talented runner. Every group must have someone that steps out of bounds or shares interesting insights on a vast array of topics, regardless of whether or not they are running related. Our personal guru and dear friend is Robert Held. Rob is another highly talented runner, who has broken the 3 hour barrier in Boston and is currently tackling a vigorous 18 week training schedule, that incorporates heavy duty mileage (capping off at 120). Our newbie to the group is Rich. I don't know much about Rich because he just joined our group, but with the limited time I spent with him on the running path, I know he has tremendous character and heart. I look forward to race morning and walking to the starting line with such an amazing group of people. They say that in any marathon, it's the journey not the actual destination that makes the whole experience memorable, after spending several hours with these individuals weekly, that phrase appears to ring true in my ears. May God continue to watch over all the Yankee Runners!!!! |
